Advanced Ecologically Engineered Systems
Advanced Ecologically Engineered Systems (AEES) are similar in concept
to constructed wetlands because they both rely on the ecological processes of natural systems. Outdoor ponds often constitute AEES for the treatment of wastewater, but they may also be constructed indoors with highly controlled settings (Leys, 2013). The most well-known AEES is the Living Machine®.
Why are AEES advantageous?
· Cost effective-require little energy input and are less expensive to build than conventional treatment facilities
· Aesthetically pleasing
· Additional benefits such as providing habitat and improving air quality
